Master Drawings New York 2017

New York

From Saturday, January 21 to Saturday, January 28, 2017, Master Drawings New York (MDNY) presents a moveable feast for the eyes on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.  Here, more than 24 of the world’s most respected art dealers will gather during an annual week-long event to present art history’s first draft--drawings, watercolors and oil sketches from the 16th to the 20th centuries.

Knowledgeable experts from London, Florence, Vienna, and other cities outside New York will unveil pop up exhibitions and dealers based in the city will stage special presentations in intimate galleries and private settings.  Many works not seen on the market in decades, if ever, are to be on view along a cosmopolitan route that begins at 2 East 63rd Street at the historic Academy Mansion and concludes at East 86th Street.

Among the rarities to be seen are a masterful ink and wash depiction of a sower by Jacopo Bassano (1592); a study of the head of a Breton woman in a traditional cap by Paul Gauguin; an iconic image of a standing dancer by Edgar Degas; and a gossamer-like portrait of a woman executed in blue pencil by Gustav Klimt.  Also to be seen are rare works by the hand of Brunelleschi, Cocteau, Hockney, Picasso, van Gogh, and Vasari, among others.

What began a decade ago as a casual gallery crawl during the Old Masters auctions and The Winter Antiques Show has grown into a much anticipated art world event.  For those who treasure master drawings for the insights they provide into the minds of artists, Master Drawings New York 2017 is an opportunity to see surprises from over five centuries, in every price range.  Admission is free.
