ARMANDO Retrospective

Voorlinden had planned a retrospective of Armando in the spring of 2019. This show would have been dedicated to the artist’s ninetieth birthday. Armando (1929-2018) passed away on 1 July in Potsdam (Germany). The planned retrospective has been brought forward, and will now be on display from Saturday 3 November 2018 to Sunday 10 March 2019.

Director Suzanne Swarts: “We had planned on celebrating Armando’s ninetieth birthday together with the artist in 2019. His death touched us deeply. We no longer want to wait with presenting this exhibition, that will be a comprehensive tribute to the artist. Now is the time to share the extraordinary oeuvre of this iconic multitalented artist with the public.”

Armando (pseudonym of Herman Dirk van Dodeweerd) is one of the most important post-war artists in Europe. For decades, Armando worked on his highly personal and versatile visual and literary oeuvre. With his expressive signature, he created paintings with thick impasto and sculptures built up with great force. In addition to being a visual artist and writer, Armando has also become known as a poet, violinist, actor, journalist, film, television and theatre maker.

The uneasy coming together of beauty and evil, melancholy, power(lessness) and incapacity are recurring themes in Armando’s oeuvre. Voorlinden shows – in collaboration with the Armando foundation - a large overview of works from the early Zero period up to and including his latest paintings. Voorlinden hereby continues its direction of programming exhibition by artists with whom the museum has a close relationship: the collection of museum Voorlinden holds over forty works by Armando.
