This October, The Collector returns to Christie’s London, New York and Paris as the international platform for connoisseurs and collectors of Decorative Arts. The sales are brought to you as a three-part series, with all lots opening for bidding on 13 October and closing consecutively by sale location on 31 October, 1 November, and 3 November. The Collector includes important European, English and 19th-century furniture, porcelain, silver, gold boxes and works of art dating from the 16th to the 20th century, all of which highlight the enduring craftsmanship and beauty of exceptional works of art.
Christie’s is honoured to present six pairs of Coronation chairs commissioned by His Majesty The King for The Coronation of Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla at the Abbey Church of Westminster on 6 May 2023. Two pairs will be offered at each sale site.
The London sale is distinguished by pieces with rich provenance from celebrated collections, including those of the fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, Jasper Conran and the Bayreuth collection of English silver. Highlights include a Louis XVI armoire stamped by Riesener, A George III commode attributed to Ince and Mayhew, a magnificent Napoleon III ‘Japonisme’ clock, a George V silver racing trophy for the Derby stakes with the mark of Mappin and Webb and an extraordinary bottle vase of monumental proportions by William de Morgan.
The New York edition similarly features works of art from notable collections, including The Personal Collection of Niall Smith, an enigmatic and visionary collector of Neoclassical decorative arts. Further collections include ‘From the Heart’ showcasing the porcelain collection of Dr Julius and Joan Jacobson, The Orange Blossom Collection of Silver, and Property from the collection of Morton and Norma Lee Funger. Also on offer are works of important provenance such as Augustus II the Strong, Elector of Saxony, alongside works by prominent makers across mediums like Giles Grendey, François Linke and Paul Storr.
In Paris, The Collector brings together works of art that illustrate centuries of artistic creation and features a curated selection of objects and furniture from French and European private collections, with a particular focus on 18th-century France.This season also showcases works with exceptional provenance, including an elegant imperial pair of ployants stools from le Palais des Tuileries, an armchair made for the Duc des Deux-ponts and a chair from the Château de Saint-Cloud.
On view in London alongside The Collector is the ceramics exhibition The Orchard Collection Formed by Giorgina Djanogly, which runs from 24–30 October.
