Die Hilger BrotKunsthalle freut sich, die Eröffnung der von der in Südafrika geborenen Kuratorin Claire Breukel gestalteten Ausstellung „Coca-colonized“ anzukündigen. In der Ausstellung werden neun Künstler aus Südamerika, Zentralamerika und Afrika vorgestellt, welche sich mit der Frage beschäftigen, was es bedeutet, „unter“ ihren nördlichen Kollegen aus der ersten Welt (vor allem in Nordamerika und Europa) zu leben und zu arbeiten. Die Ausstellung untersucht, welchen Einfluss die Massenmedien (*Coca-Kolonialisierung) auf diese „weiter entwickelten“ Regionen haben, in denen eine in die lokale Kultur integrierte Generation eine dritte „neue“ Identität schafft .„Coca-colonized“ ist die Reaktion auf die Ideologie, dass der Einfluss einer Massenkultur auf eine andere Region, die „weniger etabliert“ ist oder als „Entwicklungsland“ bezeichnet wird, eine absolute Beziehung zwischen dem Beeinflusser und dem zu Beinflussenden impliziert. Die Ausstellung ist ein Versuch, diese Beziehung in Frage zu stellen, zu zeigen, wie der Einfluss der Massenkultur in diesen Regionen absorbiert, neu interpretiert und gelegentlich auch erneuert wurde – und eine neue, eigenständige Sprache geschaffen wurde.

Hilger BrotKunsthalle is pleased to announce the opening of Coca-colonized* curated by South African-born curator Claire Breukel and featuring nine artists from South America, Central America and Africa, responding to what it means to live and work ‘beneath’ their first world Northern counterparts (specifically North America and Europe). Coca-colonized responds to the ideology that the influence of a mass culture on another, what is termed ‘less established’ or ‘developing’ region, implies an absolute relationship between the influencer and the impressionable. This exhibition is an attempt to question this relationship (neither prove or disprove) but provide evidence of how mass cultural influence has been absorbed, reinterpreted and at times rejuvenated in these regions—creating a new language in itself.

*The term cocacolonization is used to describe cases where a country's indigenous culture is eroded by a corporate mass-culture, usually from a powerful, industrialized country. This is more metaphorical usage as people need not move, to the colonized country; only cultural signals, symbols, forms of entertainment, and values need to move to the colonized country. Die interaktive Performance "VIRES" der kolumbischen Künstlerin Maria Jose Arjona setzt sich aus Aktionen an unterschiedlichen Orten in der Öffentlichkeit zusammen: Durch ihre Umsetzung an verschiedenen Veranstaltungsorten sollen die Machtkonstellationen zwischen Individuen der ersten und dritten Welt hervorgehoben werden.

The interactive performance “Vires” by the Columbian artist Maria Jose Arjona consists of activities at different places in the public: through her implementation at different event locations, the understanding of the relationship and the exertion of power between individuals from first and third world nations is to be highlighted. The performance is to serve as a metaphor for the ever-present political and economic dynamics between Europe, the USA and third world nations. The artist will perform on the day of the opening, Sept 16th at 7pm at BrotKunsthalle and in course of the Vienna Gallery Weekend on Sept 18th, starting at 1pm at Hilger contemporary.
