Sotheby’s London sale of Prints & Multiples on 22 March 2016 brought a total of £3,213,875 ($4,615,767), exceeding the pre-sale high estimate (£1.9-2.8m). With estimates starting at £1,200, the sale attracted 250 registrants, with 28% of the buyers new to Sotheby’s.
The auction was led by a complete portfolio of hand-coloured lithographs of shoe designs by Andy Warhol – À la recherche du shoe perdu, and Shoe and Leg, produced c. 1955 – which made £293,000 ($420,807), a price which established an auction record for a set of this subject by the artist. The complete portfolio, comprising 18 prints in total, rarely appears at auction; a set last came under the hammer 10 years ago.
