BRAFA – Brussel

  • Galerie De Jonckheere 'Lot and his daughters in a panoramic landscape with the towns of Sodom and Gomorrah in flames' Lucas Gassel (Helmont circa 1500-1569 Brussels) Oil on panel 38 x 55 cm Provenance: private collection He painted in the vein of Joachim Patenier using panoramic landscape like him but he expanded his field of vision by encompassing the universe in its entirety. His landscapes were always accompanied by scenes from the Old and New Testament. This episode is taken from Chapter 19 of Genesis and starts with the story of the towns of Sodom and Gommorah. Here the interest is not limited by the mannerist refinement of the characters, but also by the magnificient panoramic landscape. Endowed with a broad perspective, it reveals the different stages of the story to the viewer. It can be considered as one of the artist’s greatest achievements
