Agora Gallery is pleased to announce Marco Gallotta, Sidewalk Diaries | Papercuts, a solo exhibition of photographic and papercut collages by Italian artist Marco Gallotta.
The centerpiece of the exhibition is a series of pieces that immortalize the untold stories of passersby on a Harlem sidewalk on an ordinary day. Collaborating with the talented photographer Claudio Napoli, Gallotta captures fleeting moments of anonymous individuals, transforming them into protagonists of a photographic narrative.
Gallotta seamlessly merges his extensive expertise in mixed media with the realm of photography. Watercolors, inks, and graphite are meticulously applied to photographs, which are then skillfully cut out. By strategically overlapping layers of cut-out photographs, paper, and other materials, Marco creates ingenious compositions that come alive with depth and emotion.
The end result is a mesmerizing superimposition of images, enhanced by layers of color, wax, and various evolving materials, resulting in irregular and almost translucent surfaces. Each passerby depicted in the artworks exhibits their unique movements, progressing at different speeds towards destinations only known to them. In a fashion reminiscent of secret diaries, these individuals become characters in an unspoken narrative, where limitless possibilities reside beneath the surface.
