NEW YORK, 29 September 2016 – Sotheby’s fall season of Contemporary Art auctions in New York commenced today with Contemporary Curated, achieving $15.2 million. Led by Robert Mangold’s Three Squares Within a Triangle and Damien Hirst’s Beautiful Polarisation Of A Polar Bear's Dream In The Polar Ice Painting (With A Centre Like A Polar Bear's Eye (Or A Polar Bear's Ass)), works of art spanning six decades fetched top prices. Property from distinguished private and institutional collections, including those of Allan Stone, Sam Simon and the Museum of Modern Art, New York, were sought by collectors around the world, with buyers of top pieces spanning Europe, Asia and the United States. Sotheby’s auctions of Contemporary Art continue in Hong Kong and London next week, before returning to New York for the marquee sales in November.
Emily Kaplan, Head of Sotheby’s Contemporary Curated Auctions in New York, noted after the sale: “We are delighted with the results of today’s sale, which once again led this section of the Contemporary Art market. Fantastic results for established artists, highlighted by a flurry of bidding for Damien Hirst and Robert Longo, were well-complemented by strong prices for artists making their debut at auction, particularly Njideka Akunyili Crosby.”
