presented artists: IAN BURNS, ANASTASIA KHOROSHILOVA, SARA RAHBAR at booth 1A-14

Im Oktober 2009 umsegelte der Künstler Ian Burns gemeinsam mit einer Gruppe von Künstlern und Wissenschaftern den Spitsbergen Archipel. Berichte in Fernsehen und Internet befassen sich mit der arktischen Wildnis und beeinflussen unser Bild von dieser Region der Erde. Die Erfahrungen, die Burns in der Arktis gemacht hat, setzt er, frei von stereotypen Annahmen, künstlerisch um. Die Art und Weise wie er die Arbeiten präsentiert, hat nichts mit konventionellen Darstellungsmethoden zu tun. Die Galerie Ernst Hilger freut sich die künstlerischen “Ergebnisse”, die dieser Reise entsprungen sind und auf diese Bezug nehmen, auf der Art Brussels 2010 präsentieren zu können. Der Künstler Ian Burns wurde in Australien geboren, lebt und arbeitet in New York. Er machte seinen MFA am Hunter College in New York, seinen PHD absolvierte er an der Griffith University in Brisbane.

In October of 2009 the artist Ian Burns sailed the arctic oceans around the Spitsbergen Archipelago with a group of artists and scientists. Television and computer screens are regularly alight with images from news reports and documentaries examining and re-examining the plight of the Arctic wilderness. Translating an arctic experience contrary to the expected and consistently repeated image clichés requires works that require their own process of discovery. Galerie Ernst Hilger is proud to present Ian Burns' works stemming from, and relating to, this journey at Art Brussels 2010. Australian born artist Ian Burns lives and works in New York. He completed his MFA at Hunter College in New York, and his Doctorate in Philosophy at Griffith University in Brisbane.

Sara Rahbar wurde 1976 in Teheran geboren, floh aber aus ihrem Heimatland während der Zeit des ungeheuren Umbruchs, der auf die Revolution im Iran und mit dem Beginn des Kriegs zwischen Iran und Irak folgte. Die Künstlerin entwickelt diese Distanz, diese Nähe, auf der Basis ihrer Erinnerungen, ihrer Sehnsüchte und ihrer Apathie, welche durch die doppelte Entwurzelung Spannungen hervorruft. Rahbar studierte in London und New York und arbeitet nun zumeist entweder in Teheran oder New York. Durch dieses Pendeln wurden apokalyptische Erinnerungen revidiert, für die sie traditionelle Materialien zu prototypischen Geweben verarbeitet, in die sie ihre nationale Zugehörigkeit einwebt. Die Fahne – das Symbol für ideologische und nationalistische Gewalt – war und ist eines der Schwerpunkte ihrer als Collage gestalteten Konversationen und Streitfragen (Text in Auszügen, Shaheen Merali, Kurator).

Sara Rahbar was born in Tehran in 1976, but fled her birthplace during the period of immense upheaval that followed the revolution in Iran and the start of the Iran-Iraq war. This distance, this proximity is developed by the artist, based on memory, longing and inertia in inhabiting tensions of dual disjuncture. Rahbar studied in London and New York, and now spends most of her productive life between Tehran and New York. In this going back and forth, an apocalyptic memory has been revised in her reworking of traditional materials into proto-contemporary textiles and textures of national belonging. The symbol of ideological and nationalistic violence, the Flag, has been one of the main focuses of her collage conversations and contestations (abstract of a text, Shaheen Merali, curator).

Alle Arbeiten von Anastasia Khoroshilova beschäftigen sich mit realen Lebensbedingungen und mit Menschen als Mitglieder einer gewissen Form von Gemeinschaft - sei es aufgrund von sozialen oder geographischen Umständen. Der Baum ist eines der ursprünglichsten Elementen der visuellen Kultur, der grundlegende, binäre und doppeldeutige Bedeutungen symbolisiert, wie Leben – Tod, Himmel – Erde. Diese Bedeutungen verschwinden nicht im Laufe der Geschichte, sondern bleiben bestehen - in Form offener oder verborgener Botschaften, die sich jedes Mal, abhängig von Zeit und kulturellen Kontext, transformieren. Dies bezieht sich auch auf die visualisierten Formen. Auf Khoroshilovas Bitte haben die Studenten einer Hochschule für „Menschen mit eingeschränkten physischen Möglichkeiten“, (offizielle Bezeichnung in Russisch), die ein anderes Kommunikationssystem benutzen (Klasse für taubstumme Schauspieler), versucht in Formen der Bühnenplastizität, ihre eigene Vision der authentischen Ursprüngen des Menschen darzustellen. Zum Hintergrund dieses Experiments ist die alltägliche urbane Landschaft einer Großstadt geworden, die gegen alle Erwartungen, diesen Versuch sehr organisch aufgenommen hat.

All of Anastasia Khoroshilova’s work to date is devoted to the study of human beings in their real physical settings and as members, by force of social circumstance or geography, of a communality of some sort. The tree is one of the most original elements of the visual culture, which stand for the basic, binary meanings – life – death, heaven – earth. These meanings are not lost in the course of time, rather they endure as obvious or ambiguous messages, which transform every time – independent from time and the cultural context. This refers to the visualized forms. Upon Khoroshilova’s request, the students of the school "people with limited physical resources" (the official name in Russia), who use other forms of communication (class for deaf-mute actors), have attempted to show their own version of the authentic roots of mankind in the form of stage plasticity. The background of this experiment is the every day, urban landscape of a major city, which, against all expectations, absorbed the experiment organically.
