In the run-up to Unseen Amsterdam 2019, we've asked our curators to share a few highlights of artists premiering at the Fair this year. Focusing here on three artists working between mixed media, installation and unusual storytelling methods, learn who’s who and you pick your favourites to look out for at this year's Festival!
Alíz Veronika Ács' interest revolves around the exploration of human and transcended experiences, guided by accidental irregularities that all of us experience in our daily lives. Her latest project 'Walpurg' explores the theme of witchcraft through a series of striking portraits. Selected for their unusual features and unconventional lifestyles, for Ács these women represent the modern-day witches who defy societal norms just as their predecessors did. The artist begins carefully considering on which surfaces to print - thin plastic or old papers allow her to replicate the delicate structure of her models' skin. Experiments with lights, acid, tearing and sticking come next - the materiality of each work is as important as the photographic image.
Koen Hauser’s work nearly always originates from historical books; from the colours that pervade through bygone publications to the expressive design language and the materiality of photographic reproductions found within.
David Favrod grew up in a Japanese/Swiss family. This mixed heritage and how to deal with that personally is the main theme in Favrod’s work; he uses the medium of photography, combining it with a wide range of imaging techniques taken from the Japanese tradition of Manga and Animé. Through this, a new visual structure is created, which transcends the limitations of photography and creates new pictorial spaces and possibilities for narration.
