Since early childhood, artist Vanessa Küstner was surrounded by creative and artistic people. Some of her family members stood out as exceptionally talented painters through early generations.

By experimenting with different materials and techniques, Küstner has already created her particular style in a very short time. The artist describes her large-scale works as a mix of different techniques, starting from Expressionism, Symbolism but also Futurism and Surrealism.

At first glance, Vanessa Küstner's artworks seem to give an almost childish, naive, innocent expression but always with a deeper psychosocial meaning: "During painting, I am in my world of thoughts, I am thinking and creating philosophical theories; which is the main activity. Painting to me feels just like moving my hand, it’s like walking. Most of the time I am not very concentrated on creating lines and shapes, it happens automatically and effortlessly, it's the most relaxing thing".

Vanessa Küstner has lived in various cities such as Munich, Beijing, and Antwerp. It seems as though the time she spent in Asia has influenced her work the most. Since she refuses to paint realistic, the big round forms and bright colors give the impression of being and remaining a child. "I often strive to include the opposites of darkness, cruelness, desperation, bad, and on the other side childish, innocent, and naive impressions together. For example, I paint scared or bad expressions on my figures' faces but compensate the cruel impression with bright colors and clear, simple forms". This is a parallel to Japanese art, which the artist describes as one of her favorite artistic styles.

The title of the exhibition represents the opposite idea of what Küstner's works reflect, as some figures appear desperate or sad. It is an invitation to get together and "SMILE!"

Desde su infancia, la artista Vanessa Küstner ha estado rodeada de gente creativa y artística. Algunos miembros de su familia destacaron como pintores de excepcional talento durante las primeras generaciones.

Experimentando con distintos materiales y técnicas, Küstner ha creado su propio estilo en poco tiempo. La artista describe sus obras de gran tamaño como una mezcla de diferentes técnicas, partiendo del expresionismo, el simbolismo, pero también el futurismo y el surrealismo.

A primera vista, las obras de Vanessa Küstner parecen tener una expresión casi infantil, ingenua e inocente, pero siempre con un significado psicosocial más profundo: "Mientras pinto, estoy en mi propio mundo de pensamientos, pienso y creo teorías filosóficas; ésa es mi actividad principal. Pintar es como mover la mano, como caminar. La mayor parte del tiempo no estoy muy concentrada en crear líneas y formas, es automático y sin esfuerzo, es de lo más relajante".

Vanessa Küstner ha vivido en distintas ciudades, desde Múnich y Pekín hasta Amberes. Parece que el tiempo que pasó en Asia es lo que más ha influido en su obra. Se niega a pintar de forma realista, las grandes formas redondeadas y los colores vivos dan la impresión de ser y seguir siendo una niña. "A menudo me esfuerzo por reunir estas oposiciones de oscuridad, crueldad, desesperación, maldad y por otro lado la impresión infantil, inocente e ingenua. Por ejemplo, pinto expresiones asustadas o malvadas en los rostros de mis figuras, pero luego compenso esta impresión cruel con colores brillantes, formas claras y sencillas". Se trata de un paralelismo con el arte japonés, el cual la artista también describe como uno de sus estilos favoritos.

El título de la exposición representa la idea opuesta a lo que reflejan las obras de Küstner, ya que algunas figuras parecen desesperadas o tristes. También es una invitación a reunirse y "SMILE!"
