NEW YORK, 4 December 2020 - Today, Sotheby’s released a short-film with the acclaimed New York City Ballet, inspired by the iconic holiday story and ballet, The Nutcracker. The original work was specially created for, and filmed in Sotheby’s galleries on York Avenue by NYCB Soloist and choreographer Peter Walker. The event ushers in The Festival of Wonder, Sotheby’s two-week luxury sale series of jewels, watches, sneakers, designer handbags and wine offered through live and online auctions, in addition to the company’s new Buy Now marketplace.
Introduced by NYCB Artistic Director Jonathan Stafford and Frank Everett, Sotheby’s Senior Vice President of Jewelry in New York, the original interpretation was set to a modernized arrangement of the "Waltz of the Flowers" from The Nutcracker’s second act and performed by NYCB Soloist Sebastian Villarini-Velez and Corps de Ballet member India Bradley, who were styled in glittering jewelry and important watches from Sotheby's Magnificent Jewels and Important Watches auctions. In tandem, the dancers were surrounded by mounted artworks on offer in Sotheby’s upcoming Impressionist, Modern & Contemporary Art marquee auction on 8 December.
The film aired on Friday, 4 December at 2pm on Sothebys.com and across Sotheby’s social media channels including Instagram, Facebook and YouTube.
Sotheby’s Festival of Wonder exhibitions are now on view at 1334 York Avenue through Monday, December 14th at 5pm EST. The exhibition is free and open to the public, by appointment only. For more information on auction highlights, please see separate press release attached.
