Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac looks forward to seeing you at ARCOmadrid 2019, where we will present a selection of works by Miquel Barceló, Georg Baselitz, Rosemarie Castoro, Tony Cragg, VALIE EXPORT, Antony Gormley, Imi Knoebel, Robert Mapplethorpe, Yan Pei-Ming, Arnulf Rainer, Daniel Richter, Juan Uslé and Emilio Vedova.
Best known for his pastose, relief-like mixed media work, Spanish artist Miquel Barceló’s deep-sea painting Manifesto Haptique (2015) is from a series inspired by the submarine ecosystem of his native Mallorca, the changing forms of the sea and its creatures like octopus and cuttlefish.
Georg Baselitz’s large-scale oil painting Rayski Kopf (2016) belongs to an ongoing series in which the artist depicts 19th century painter Ferdinand von Rayski. The first work from the series, painted in 1957, is considered the very first work that the artist exhibited publicly. Major forthcoming retrospectives of Baselitz’s work include the Gallerie dell’Accademia coinciding with the opening of the Venice Biennale in May and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris in Spring 2020.
Tony Cragg's stainless steel sculpture Gate (2017) exemplifies his primary concern to find new, unprecedented forms that amaze the viewer with their unusual biomorphic and technoid references. In 2018 five of his monumental sculptures were installed along Park Avenue in New York, and in May 2019 new sculptures by the artist will be installed in the Boboli Gardens of the Uffizi in Florence.
Italian painter Emilio Vedova (1919-2006) a very close friend of Georg Baselitz, painted the monumental Ciclo 81 – Compresenze – 7” (1981) in the decade considered to be the acme of his career. Following the first historical survey exhibition of Vedova’s work in France at our Paris Marais gallery, upcoming shows will be held at the Fondazione Vedova in Venice in April 2019, curated by Georg Baselitz, and at the Palazzo Reale in Milano in November 2019, curated by Germano Celant.
