Jean-Paul Capitani [1944 — 2023]

The Rencontres d’Arles are shocked and deeply saddened to hear of Jean-Paul Capitani’s sudden death today, Tuesday, April 4.

Jean-Paul was a leading figure in Arles and a longtime friend of the festival.

With his passing, an uninhibited look at the world has gone out.
v His enthusiasm, indefatigable energy and touch of sweet madness in carrying out new projects seemed as boundless as the mistral that sweeps through the streets of Arles.

Now those streets seem empty.

Jean-Paul was a quiet, earnest and completely committed man, a man of his word who knew how to part the clouds.

We were unprepared for the silence that his passing leaves.

Our thoughts are with Françoise, his children, his grandchildren and his friends at this time of deep sorrow.

The Rencontres d’Arles Board of Directors and staff.
