The work originates in the artist John Gerrard being struck by what he perceived to be the peculiar devotional quality of the oil derrick, stooping repetitively to the earth as though in prayer. The title of the work relates to the wide variety of ways in which the work can be understood to be animated, both literally, in that this is a sculptural tableaux brought to life by the artist but also by the works relations to power in the form of oil and by extension to spheres of politics, economics, society.

Ich nannte mein größtes Projekt “Russkie”. Ich möchte Menschen verschiedenster Nationalitäten und religiöser Konfessionen zusammenbringen, die im Laufe der Zeit aus den unterschiedlichsten Ländern auf russischen Boden gelangt sind, um hier unter den von der Geschichte geprägten Bedingungen zusammen zu leben. Die Geschichte hat bereits so viele Prüfungen und Versuche mit diesen Menschen durchgeführt, dass eine ständige Furcht zum Bestandteil ihres Lebens und ihres Schicksals geworden ist. Deshalb beschloss ich für mich selbst in meiner frei wählbaren, visuellen Welt, sie so zu belassen wie sie sind. I called my biggest project, “Russkie.” I want to bring together people of various nationalities and various religious confessions who, over time, landed in the Russian state from all kinds of other countries to live together in conditions shaped by history. History has already subjected these people to so many trials and experiments that constant anxiety has become their life and fate. That is why I immediately decided for myself: even in my arbitrary visual world, I will leave them be as they are. I do not wish, nor do I have the right, to meddle with their reality and trouble them once more. At the conceptual level, they became my conception.
