287 premier galleries to show at Art Basel's 47th edition in Basel

Art Faire

Additional highlights of the Feature sector will include a presentation by Wentrup (Berlin) of Olaf Metzel’s (b.1952) ‘Sammelstelle’ (1992), an immersive and emotive installation which initially responded to refugees arriving in Germany from former Yugoslavia in 1992, but today resonates heavily with the current European migration crisis, while James Fuentes (New York) will present Jonas Mekas’ (b.1922) ‘Images Out of Darkness: Reminiscences of a Displaced Person, Postwar Germany 1945-1949’ (2012), a series of images documenting his own experiences of displacement and confinement. Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects (Culver City) will show new paintings by Sadie Benning (b.1973). Solo presentations in the Statements sector offer visitors and collectors the opportunity to discover the work of emerging artists and young galleries. This year, seven of the 18 galleries exhibiting within Statements will be new to the show: Johan Berggren Gallery (Malmö), Carroll / Fletcher (London), Selma Feriani Gallery (Sidi Bou Said), Foxy Production (New York), Maisterravalbuena (Madrid), Galeria Stereo (Warsaw) and Simone Subal Gallery (New York). Laura Bartlett Gallery (London) will present Sol Calero’s (b.1982) installation of a replicated Latin American Bureau de Change, incorporating the creation of a currency edition for the show, bringing to the fore the fragility of currency circulation and the current situation in her home country of Venezuela. Bureau (New York) will present new sculptural installations by Lionel Maunz (b.1976) exploring his dark vision of our society and of his own memories, whilst Foxy Production (New York) will show ‘Soft Misogyny’ (2016), a major new film by Sara Cwynar (b.1985) that reflects her interest in how objects circulate via the internet. Newcomer, Johan Berggren Gallery (Malmö) will be showing a new script ‘Turtle’ (2015) recently written by Jasper Spicero (b.1990). Alongside the script, Spicero will be showing a digitally rendered animation, sculptural works as well as an installational environment. 47 Canal (New York) will present new works by Ajay Kurian (b.1984) initially inspired by Pixar’s recent film ‘Inside Out’, whilst Société (Berlin) will present an immersive tomb-like installation by Timur Si-Qin (b.1984) filling the entirety of their stand. Carroll / Fletcher (London) will premier Basel Abbas and Ruanne Abou-Rahme’s (b.1983) installation ‘May Amnesia Never Kiss Us on the Mouth’ (2016), the result of a two-year research project on amnesia in an age where documentation has never been so incessant. Micky Schubert (Berlin) will present an environment of photographic images by Ketuta Alexi-Meskhishvili (b.1979), specially conceived for the show, and Arratia Beer (Berlin) will present Mary Reid Kelley’s (b.1979) new film ‘This is Offal’ (2015), which examines suicide in tragicomic form. Selma Feriani Gallery (Sidi Bou Said) will present a selection of mixed media works by Massinissa Selmani (b.1980) representing the artist’s continuous journey in exploring and depicting movement inspired by popular imagery and happenings.

The Baloise Art Prize will be awarded to up to two artists exhibiting in Statements, with recipients being announced during the show in June. The Bâloise Group also acquires works by the award-winning artists, which it donates to the Museum für Moderne Kunst Dimitrijević (b.1948), the first significant presentation of his work at an art fair since he showed at the inaugural edition of Art Basel in 1970, while

Frankfurt am Main and Mudam Luxembourg. The institutions will hold solo exhibitions for the recipients of the award. Unlimited, Art Basel's unique platform for projects that transcend the limitations of a traditional art-fair stand, will be curated for the fifth year by Gianni Jetzer, Curator-at- large at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington DC, with over 70 works ranging from large-scale sculptures and paintings to video projections, installations and live performances. Further details will be announced in the coming months.

Parcours, a series of site-specific sculptures, interventions and performances by renowned international artists and emerging talents, presented by Art Basel galleries, will be curated for the first time by Samuel Leuenberger, founder of the not-for-profit exhibition space SALTS, in Birsfelden, Switzerland. Parcours this year will again take place around Basel's Münsterplatz area. Parcours is open to the public and free of charge. Further details will be announced in the coming months.

Conversations and Salon, the extensive program of talks and panel discussions accompanies the gallery presentations in Basel offering audience’s access to first-hand information on the international art world. The talks will take place in the auditorium within Hall 1. Videos of past talks and discussions can be found at artbasel.com/basel/talks. Further details on this year's Conversations and Salon program will be released in the coming months.
