287 premier galleries to show at Art Basel's 47th edition in Basel

Art Faire

Art Basel today announced its gallery list for the 47th edition of the show in Basel, Switzerland, taking place from June 16 to June 19, 2016. This year, 287 leading international galleries will present works ranging from the early 20th century to the most contemporary artists of today. The Basel show, whose Lead Partner is UBS, will present a diverse geographical selection of leading international galleries from 33 countries.

Alongside a strong representation of galleries from Europe, exhibitors and artists will be shown from across the globe. The participating galleries have exhibition spaces in Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Cuba, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Lebanon, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Galleries, the main sector of the show, will feature 221 galleries presenting the highest quality of painting, sculpture, drawing, installation, photography, video and editioned works. A strong list of returning exhibitors is joined by six galleries who will exhibit within the sector for the first time, having previously shown in Statements or Feature: Applicat- Prazan (Paris), Borzo (Amsterdam), Karma International (Zurich, Beverly Hills), Jack Shainman Gallery (New York, Kinderhook), Stevenson (Cape Town, Johannesburg) and Barbara Wien (Berlin). The Galleries sector will also include two completely new exhibitors: joségarcía ,mx (Mexico DF) and Pace/MacGill Gallery (New York). The full gallery list is available from artbasel.com/basel/galleries. The Edition sector, dedicated to prints and limited-editioned works, will bring together 16 specialists in the field. This year’s show will feature Brooke Alexander, Inc. (New York), Niels Borch Jensen Gallery and Editions (Copenhagen, Berlin), Alan Cristea Gallery (London), mfc – michèle didier (Paris), Atelier-Editions Fanal (Basel), Gemini G.E.L. LLC (Los Angeles), Helga Maria Klosterfelde Edition (Berlin, Hamburg), Sabine Knust (Munich), Carolina Nitsch (New York), Pace Prints (New York), Paragon (London), Polígrafa Obra Gràfica (Barcelona), STPI (Singapore), Three Star Books (Paris), Two Palms (New York) and ULAE (Bay Shore).

The Feature sector presents galleries with precise curatorial projects, showing both historical and contemporary work. This year’s expanded sector will feature 32 galleries of which eight galleries are new to the show. Highlights of the sector will include a restaging of Jannis Kounellis’ (b.1936) seminal work ‘Da inventare sul posto’ (1972), a hybrid of painting and performance in which a violinist playing a section of ‘La Pulcinella’ is joined by an un-choreographed ballerina in front of an abstract painting, presented by Luxembourg & Dayan (New York, London). Bergamin & Gomide (São Paulo) will show a selection of works by Mira Schendel (b.1919) relating to the most important phases of the artist’s practice. James Cohan Gallery (New York) will exhibit a selection of very rare Pop works by Robert Smithson (b.1938) predating his classic Non-Sites and seminal outdoor earthworks. The selection of drawings presented will demonstrate the breadth of Smithson’s cultural interests along with his willingness to combine the sacred with the 

profane. galerie frank elbaz (Paris) will present a selection of works on paper, paintings and sculptures by three artists linked to the West Coast's Beat Generation: Jay DeFeo (b.1929), Wallace Berman (b.1926) and Bruce Conner (b.1933). Derek Eller Gallery (New York) will show a selection of newly discovered sketchbook drawings by Karl Wirsum (b.1939) from the period 1963–1969, representing studies for a number of his significant Hairy Who era paintings and comic book pages. Waldburger Wouters (Brussels) will present Lynn Hershman Leeson’s (b.1941) ground breaking ‘The Roberta Breitmore Series’ (1974–1978), a body of work encompassing the key elements of the artist's practice and widely acknowledged as being a precursor to the later work of Cindy Sherman and Sophie Calle. espaivisor (Valencia) will show a selection of early works by the conceptual artist Braco Grimm (Amsterdam) will present a solo booth of historical conceptual works by Ger van Elk (b.1941).
